Ever Dream?
I have always wanted to leave a legacy behind me. Once, I thought it was going to be what I leave my daughters --pearls of wisdom, a few keepsakes, hopefully no big bills to pay in my prolonged absence. Then I thought it would be that plus what a teacher leaves her students--the skills and motivation to live a better life that would make the world a better place than it is. And recently, it is all that PLUS a series of innovative, full-inclusion, differentiated lesson plans centered on Rudyard Kipling, King Arthur legends, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle--with the suspenseful Highgate Cemetery thrown in for good measure.
Being awarded the 2011 McGlothlin Award has afforded me the opportunity to dream big. That money pretty much has to be spent on education, so I've planned a trip to England and Cornwall. I've not been on a real vacation since 1984, so this trip is a big deal. Because the ability to design curriculum is the result of a generous gift, it is only fitting that I gift my creations to teachers everywhere. My lessons will center on seventh-grade curriculum and follow Virginia's standards (SOLs) as well as those prescribed the the National Council for the Teachers of English (NCTE) and the upcoming National Core Standards. When I am satisfied with the lessons and all the materials teachers need to enrich their students' lives, I will make them available, free of charge.
Keep checking this website. There is a blog section to keep you up-to-date on my travels. There's a photo album page where I can post the latest in visual travelogue style. You can also see the latest travel plan, which has the main sites I need to visit along with the rationale for each stop.
