Merlin's Cave Stories
Mrs. Phillips standing inside Merlin's cave
This is where you will find Merlin these days...in a cave below the ruins of Tintagel Castle in Cornwall (the only part of England that is not officially a part of England). You've hiked seven plus miles and find the cave at sea level, some seventy-five feet below you. You hiked along the cliffs that drop into the Celtic Sea, and you have to take the slippery, dangerous footpath down the side of the cliff. After scooting from large rock to large rock on you derriere because the drops from one to the other are as great as four feet at forty-degree angles in the damp misty air, you are certainly relieved to have your shaky legs reach the loose rocks and sands that were left behind when the tide went out. You know you only have an hour before it starts coming back in. You are tired and want a place to sit down a spell.
Spell?!! Well, of course. It is Merlin's cave, after all. To help you get in the mood for sitting in a spooky cave for twenty minutes, here's a slide show. You can see pictures of the cave and hear the sea, the wind, and cave sounds. What is that bright light that hovered toward me, illuminated what was formerly a very dark end of the cave? What are those murmurs in the audio recording? Or is it just your imagination. Here's your chance to write your very own Merlin's Cave story. Good luck--and don't disturb anything. You never know who will come after you if you so much as pick up a rock from the cave floor.
