Paying It Forward!
EmilySarah Visits Northern Ireland in January
My older daughter received her RN in May, and because she started a new job in June, she could not accompany me on my quest. After traveling to England, I realized that I had an opportunity to send her to a place of her choice--on the condition that she take plenty of pictures that could be used to create lessons. She came home with wonderful stories, a couple hundred pictures, and material for a cultural diffusion lesson for World Geography. To add a cross curricular spin to her experiences, my team will host a "Luck of the Irish Day" in march. Students will play probability games, chart genetic traits, design currency for leprechauns, and write a short story based on photograph prompts titled "Ubiubiquitous Emerald Isle." All this will stem from EmilySarah's week-long trip to Belfast to visit a friend who attends Queen's University. Of course, there was a day set aside for Dublin.
Amanda Visits Belize and Guatemala in January
An Eco-Tourism Model for Southwest Virginia
My younger daughter is a senior at Wofford College. Last spring I invited her to go to England with me, but she had already accepted a summer staff job at Windy Gap, a YoungLife camp in Weaverville, North Carolina. She loves that work so much, it was unthinkable to take the summer off to travel. When the fall semester started, Amanda told me about an interim trip to Belize she was interested in. Funnily enough, I had enough money to pay for her trip. She got to spend two weeks in Belize with a side trip to Guatemala. Her goal? To evaluate Belize's eco-tourism model and see if it could be applied to Southwest Virginia. Amanda wants to be a counselor in a school after she finishes Grad School. The cohort she wanted to join at Wake Forest is full right now, so we are hoping for a spot. Regardless, Amanda has discovered that travel is on most people's list of things to do in life. Having finally gone somewhere, she can identify with that sentiment! Amanda and her friends at Wofford College took plenty of pictures for me to share on this website. There are fantastic photograph writing prompts being made as I post this. At some point, Amanda's slide show will become annotated. In the meantime, enjoy the slide show.
